Indeed.com - Review

job-searchAs you guys know I am back in the market for a full-time job,(blogging just ain’t paying the bills). I have been on a couple interviews, all with financial recruiting firms. Which in my opinion is a good way to get in some practice for before high pressure interviews with actually companies. In addition it has proven to be great way to get some awsome tips and pointers from the recruiting firms associates. One great tip I got is to use Indeed.com for my online job search.

Although Indeed.com has been around since 2004, I must admit I had never heard about it before. Basically Indeed.com is a job search engine. It searches thousands of other websites including major job boards, newspapers, associations and company career pages and aggregates the listings.

Indeed.com has a very simple user interface, almost Google-like in its simplicity It is very user friendly. To use Indeed, you do not have to be a registered user. However, I became a registered user after filling in about 4 lines of info. The benefits of becoming one are having the ability to save job searches and having job alerts emailed.

There is also a Job Trends feature which searches job postings by job title, keywords or company and produces job trend graphs which shows the percentage of jobs they find that contain your search term.

Additionally, Indeed also offers a salary search, which produces average salary for various job titles in different cities, states or zip codes. You can also compare average salaries between different locations. For example internal auditors in New York, NY make an average of $96,000, which is $18K more than internal auditors make in Baltimore, Md.

There is also a Forum to discuss employment inquiries with other users. Altogether indeed.com has proven to be quite an essential tool and time saving tool in my ongoing job search.¢

How to Build an Emergency Car Kit

carsnowkit_smPublic transportation in our area is excellent during the week but on the weekends service is limited which restricts our weekend travel.

So after much discussion, my fiance recently bought a used car basically to run errands and for our weekend road trips.  For the extended road trips I have decided to be prepared and put together an emergency car kit. These are the items I need to included:

Water

It is essential to have drinkable bottled water in your car at all times. It comes in handy for hydration purposes if stranded (experts recommend 1gal. per person per day), washing wounds, sanitation, and for cooling an overheating car.

Food

When selecting food for your emergency kit it is important to choose high calorie, high energy foods that are non-perishable. Example granola bars, peanut butter and raisins.

Warmth

For the summer you want to keep a raincoat or poncho handy. In cooler seasons you want to have wool blankets and coats.

First Aid Kit

In case of injury while on the road a first aid kit is essential, since medical assistance maybe some time away. The following items will prove to be priceless in case of injury:

Tools

Having tools such as jumper cables and a shovel can save you both time and money. In most case you won’t have to wait for a tow truck to arrive and then pay what ever price they decide to charge you.

However in unavoidable circumstances it important to have at least three towing services stored in your cell phone.

Guidelines for a good Cover Letter

I am back in the market for a job.I would like to get back into public accounting so i can knockout the 2 year public accounting requirement towards getting my CPA.

Some of the firms I am interested in require that you submit a cover letter along with your resume. Also I have learned it  sets you apart if you actually take the time to write and send a cover letter, even with e-mailed correspondence.

So I have complied a list of guidelines for a good cover letter.

First Rule

Keep it short, no longer than 3-4 paragraphs. Also it is important to customize your cover letter for each position and not just send out “one size fits all” cover letters.

Salutations

Do your best to find the decision maker’s name, and use it in the salutation. If you are applying to a blind ad, say “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To the Hiring Manager.

Fist Paragraph

In your first paragraph, explain why you are writing:-

The middle paragraphs

Explain why you are a good candidate, and show that you are knowledgeable about the company. Then convey a clear story about your career, and highlight specific past achievements. This can either be done as a narrative or in bullet points.

The Conclusion

Finish your letter by indicating that you will follow up in the near future (and make good on that promise). Sign off with a “Sincerely,” “Cordially,” “Thank you for your consideration” or similar closer, followed by your name and, if you like, your e-mail address.

Read and re-read

Have a friend or professional proof read your cover letter. If there are typos or other errors in the cover letter. Your whole résumé probably will be eliminated from consideration.¢

Protect the Environment and Earn Swag Bucks

Today I earned 29 Swag Bucks just by trading in my unused cell phone. The process of trading in is very hassle free and Swag Bucks pays for shipping!

For those of you who still do not use Swagbucks I talked about it here.

My phone was a pretty old model so I bet you can earn much more Swag Bucks if you have a newer model phone that you don’t use.

Save the Environment

If you didn’t know electronics aren’t biodegradable and they even contain toxic parts that could leak into landfills and pollute our environment! Instead, put your old cell phone junk to better use.

Trade In Steps

  1. Look up your cell phone here.
  2. Erase all personal and sensitive information from the phone
  3. Remove all passwords and user locks from the phone
  4. Print pre-paid shipping label & trade-in receipt
  5. Pack and ship phone with pre-paid label & trade-in reciept
  6. Relax and your Swag Bucks will be credited to your account. ¢

My Money Makin System!

This is a funny video sent to me by one of my readers, after reading the post I wrote about “My Gambling Addiction“. It touches both on the shadiness of late night TV info-mercials and the astronomical odds of winning the lottery. Just some Monday Morning humor. ¢

New PineCone Research Sign-Up Link

I have been a Pineone Research member since about 12/2008 and sincepinecone1 then I have made about $21.

Payouts are $3 per survey (you can also get paid through your Paypal account). It is not terribly efficient but if you have 15-20 minutes  to spare. Pinecone  remains one of the better paying and reliable survey companies. It tends to be pretty hard to get accepted, as they only accept applications intermittently.

Try this updated link. Hurry because it probably won’t last very long.

Pincone is the only paid survey site that I use presently because the site offers regular surveys (about 1 survey every two weeks)  and are upfront about payouts. If you guys have any more reliable sites let me know. ¢
